David was born in 1967 in the city of Plymouth nestled on the Devon Cornwall border. The area is surrounded by some of most scenic countryside in the.UK to the south is the beautiful coastline with its beaches and dramatic cliffs & all the wildlife that accompanies it. To the north is Dartmoor national park that offers so many different habitats & wild vistas. Growing up in this area & with encouragement from his parents David began painting the wildlife he saw around him. During this time a menagerie of birds began to grow at home with wild casualties and waifs & strays coming in from all directions.
Working in gold leaf & hand embellishing everything from vans & shop fronts to regimental crests for the royal marines David ran his own sign company for about 9 years. Eventually David became disillusioned with the demise of this grand old trade at the hands of the cheaper, faster vinyl machines & decided to close his business & paint wildlife full time instead of part time as he had been doing.
Another aspect of his life at this time was his love of falconry & flying his own hawks daily this has lead to David exhibiting at all the major falconry shows & building a worldwide reputation as one of the leading artists in this genre. Attending international field meets in Africa & America has taken him to some of the most beautiful wilderness areas still left in pursuit of his love of hunting with falcons. This has lead to many commissions from fellow falconers who know every last feather on their charges something that other “wildlife painters “ never get right but being a falconer David knows only to well.
Now in his 17th year as a professional artist, David travels extensively especially in Africa his favourite destination. He has now visited most national parks spanning Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, and Tanzania including the great Serengeti eco system a whole world within its self. From the Kalahari Desert to the skeleton coast, down the Okavango delta, & the Great Plains David has been able to witness first hand nature at its best & cruellest all invaluable to produce accurate paintings.
Just as exciting are some destinations closer to home these being some of the many islands that abound the coastline of the UK during the summer months sees David crewing a rib belonging to his good friend Nick Pitts & visiting these islands all with their own colonies & biodiversity ranging from the puffin colonies on Skomer, the Lundy island peregrines & marine reserve where seals, dolphins & seabirds abound. Recently after towing the rib to Scotland they undertook a tour of the Hebrides & were able to study whales, dolphins, basking sharks countless seabird colonies & the rare white –tailed sea eagles amongst countless other bird species .one of the highlights of the trip being witness to otters hunting the fore shore.
Currently David is still flying his falcons every day & embarking into the world of bronze sculpture something he hopes to have in production in the near future.
